What is the Boiler Upgrade Scheme?
The Government’s new Boiler Upgrade Scheme becomes available from 1st April 2022 to help homeowners with the upfront costs of installing an air or ground source heat pump. This is replacing the current Renewable Heat Incentive Scheme which finishes on 31st March 2022.
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme will be open to applications for 3 years so will run until 31st March 2025. The government have set aside £450 million of funding for the scheme to help homeowners in England and Wales install low-carbon heating systems, the government has pledged to install 600,000 heat pumps in homes by 2028.
UK heating systems account for approximately 14% of the Uk’s carbon emissions and therefore the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) is part of the Heat and Buildings Strategy which aim to cut carbon emissions from homes and is a key driver to help the UK reach its net zero target by 2050.
How can you benefit from the Boiler Upgrade Scheme?
Under the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, homeowners will be able to claim a fixed amount of £5,000 towards the installation of an air source heat pump and £6,000 towards the installation of a ground source heat pump. Custom and self build homes will also be eligible to claim the voucher Boiler Upgrade Scheme.
These technologies will be supported by the BUS:
• Ground Source Heat Pumps
• Water Source Heat Pumps
• Air Source Heat Pumps
• Biomass Boilers (where replacing fossil fuels and only in rural areas with populations of 10,000 people or less. They won’t be offered to urban areas)
Homeowners who wish to take advantage of the scheme, will need to contact installers as normal and once they have chosen their installer and agreed for the works to be completed the installer can then submit the required information to claim the voucher. OFGEM will then contact the customer to confirm the installer is acting on their behalf. If the customer does not provide this consent then the application for the voucher can not proceed, even if the other evidence is provided.
All eligible installations will be claimed by the installer on behalf of the homeowners, the installer will confirm proof of the installation and process the completed paperwork, the homeowner will be liable for the remaining installation cost.
