New Build with Swimming Pool, Triple ASHP, UFH
Mr H was recommended to R A Brown Heating Services, by his architect, so we were able to provide advice and guidance at an early stage. He was looking to create a new family home, annexe and indoor swimming pool set in an acre of land, where there was no access to a gas supply.
Mr H said “I wanted to be as energy efficient as possible, especially given I have 6500 sq ft to heat and an indoor heated pool. I was conscious, I wanted to build something robust that would ensure lower energy bills and be environmentally friendly”
We discussed a ground source heat pump for the increased efficiency, however due to the client’s budget available, this was not something he wished to consider.
The client was originally looking at an electric direct heating system for the swimming pool, however due to the large heat requirement our recommendation was to include a 3rd air source heat pump, to heat the swimming pool more efficiently.
The solution designed was crucial to the customer achieving his objective. We recommended a triple NIBE F2040 16kW ASHP cascade system to heat every aspect required. 3000 metres of underfloor heating pipe was fitted to the main house, annexe and around the pool area, working at a maximum flow temperature of 45°C The heating system is mainly operated by weather compensation with additional thermostats.
The house was also fitted with a large 10kW solar array PV system which was compatible with the Heat Pump Controller integration. This enables the Heat Pump system to utilise any excess energy from the PV system.
“Your designer has been a breath of fresh air right from the start. He has challenged many aspects of the design we initially had in place and formulated a brilliant design that is already proving dividend in reality. He has always been available to discuss any aspects or queries I have had and believe me we have had a lot along the way due to the complexity of the project”
Mr H had considered LPG heating for the main house and annexe, however two 16kW ASHP were able to provide a 57% saving on electricity providing a saving of £1,559.17 per annum on electricity cost. He also was originally considering Electric Direct Heating to heat the swimming pool however the 3rd heat pump solution we presented to the customer meant that a saving of 67% electricity would save the customer £5,123.07 per annum in electricity cost for the swimming pool. The heat pump solution meant a total £6682.24 per annum cost saving of heating the properties and swimming pool compared to the original solution.
Carbon reduction figures for this installation
Mr H has also reduced the carbon emissions for his property, with the original plan of using LPG for the house and annexe and direct electric heating for the swimming pool, the estimated annual emissions would have been 22,300 kg CO2/kWh. With the installation of a triple ASHP and UFH the estimated annual emissions have reduced to 6927 kg CO2/kWh, giving a staggering CO2 saving 15,373 kg CO2/kWh per annum.
“From the outset with R A Brown, I found their approach honest and very engaging. It was like they were working on their own home. The knowledge and expertise was head and shoulders above all the other companies I had contacted. I would also like to say that the installation teams quality of workmanship and standard is a constant point of conversation, anytime my plant room door is open to visitors.”
